The Main & Winchester Saddlery was established in San Francisco,
California the same year that gold was found at Sutter’s Mill in 1849
The Great California Gold Rush. The Main & Winchester Saddlery was a
partnership between Charley Main & Ezra H. Winchester bringing one of
the most diverse and popular Saddleries in the United States to San
Francisco, California at the height of the California Gold Rush.
The thing that made the Main & Winchester Saddlery one of the most
well known among the Old West Saddleries was the shops ability to
produce a large number of different varieties of items from Gun
Leather to Saddle Bags.The Main & Winchester saddle varieties from
ranged from Pony Express Saddles to Polo Saddles, English, Western and
a large number of Military Saddles.
At the peak of the Main & Winchester popularity the Saddlery offered
more than 100 different styles and variations of saddles to fit just
about any need, also included was the ability the make the harnesses
and tack necessary for any job at hand.
The Main & Winchester Saddlery lasted from 1849 until 1905 when
Main& Winchester Merged with L. D. Stone to become Main Winchester and
by 1912 the Company was bought out Keyston Brothers of San Francisco,
California.
