S. C. Gallup Saddlery Company

The famous Samuel Caldwell Gallup was really better known as S. C. Gallup and he was a saddle maker from the 1860s until he died in November of 1904. Throughout the time S. C. Gallup was in the Saddlery business he had many partnerships with many famous saddle makers of the time in their own right. Originally S. C. Gallup mastered the art of saddle making at the Gallup & Gallatin Saddlery in Denver, CO. In 1869 the famous saddle maker E. L. Gallatin assisted S. C. Gallup in opening his Saddlery business in Pueblo, CO.  Later in 1878 S. C. Gallup also opened a branch of his business in Dodge City, KS but this was a short lived expansion and in 1880 S. C. Gallup sold the Dodge City Saddlery to the manager at the time Robert Rice who renamed the business R. F. Rice Saddlery. The Rice Saddlery was opened just a few years before Robert Rice returned to Pueblo, CO and went back to work for S. C. Gallup.  In 1880 Robert Thompson Frazier came to work for S. C. Gallup and in 1892 the two men formally made a partnership which was the S. C. Gallup & Frazier Saddlery. The makers mark logo was a Long Horn Steer Saddled with a Pueblo Style Saddle along with a G & F on the front steer shoulder that partnership lasted until 1898. When the Partners split in 1898 S. C. Gallup retained the makers mark logo and R. T. Frazier retained the Company Tag Line “Builder of the Famous Pueblo Saddle” both Saddle Makers stayed in Pueblo, CO and achieved great things in their businesses. When Samuel Caldwell Gallup died in November of 1904 his wife Judith Gallup continued to operate the Company as President and Chairman until 1912, at that time  James Wimmer became President and Chairman until his death in 1921. The Saddlery was finally closed by 1924 although orders were filled by T. Flynn Saddlery until at least 1932.
